PANDA FORCE excavator brush cutter hydraulic rotary disc attachment cutting dense vegetation

PANDA FORCE — Hydraulic Rotary Disc Cutting Attachment

Excavator Brush Cutter

The PANDA FORCE excavator brush cutter is a hydraulic rotary disc attachment engineered for 5–30 tonne excavators. Unlike a flail mower, the brush cutter uses one or more large rotating discs with fixed blades to deliver a clean, precise cut on dense vegetation, scrub and woody brush. It is the preferred choice where cut quality, clean stem finish and selective cutting are priorities over mulching.

What Is an Excavator Brush Cutter?

An excavator brush cutter is a hydraulic attachment that mounts to the arm of an excavator and uses one or more high-speed rotating cutting discs to cut dense vegetation, woody brush, saplings and small trees. Unlike a flail mower — which uses a drum fitted with multiple free-swinging flails — a brush cutter uses a fixed or semi-fixed cutting disc that rotates at high speed and cuts vegetation with a clean, precise action similar to a large circular saw.

The excavator brush cutter is the preferred tool when clean, precise cutting is required rather than mulching. Where a flail mower shreds vegetation into fine particles and returns them to the ground, a brush cutter cuts stems cleanly at the base, leaving cut material on the ground for collection or natural decomposition. This makes the brush cutter the correct choice for selective vegetation management, invasive species removal, orchard and vineyard work, and applications where the cut material needs to be removed rather than mulched in place.

PANDA FORCE excavator brush cutters are manufactured by SOOSAN Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., a Korean industrial manufacturer with over 30 years of hydraulic engineering expertise. The PF-EBC Series covers excavators from 3 tonnes to 25 tonnes with working widths from 600mm to 1,600mm, providing a comprehensive range for contractors, municipal operators and agricultural businesses.

Excavator Brush Cutter vs Excavator Flail Mower: Which Do You Need?

The choice between an excavator brush cutter and an excavator flail mower depends on the application, material type and the desired outcome. Both are hydraulic excavator attachments for vegetation management, but they work differently and produce different results.

A flail mower is the better choice when the goal is to cut and mulch vegetation in a single pass, returning fine material to the ground as a natural mulch. Flail mowers are highly productive on grass, light brush and mixed vegetation, and the mulch output eliminates the need for cut material collection. They are the standard choice for roadside maintenance, canal bank management, slope mowing and general vegetation control.

A brush cutter is the better choice when clean, precise cutting is required — when you need to cut specific plants while leaving others undamaged, when the cut material needs to be removed rather than mulched, or when you are working in dense woody vegetation where a flail mower would struggle. Brush cutters are particularly effective on saplings, dense scrub, invasive species and woody material up to 150mm diameter.

In practice, many contractors operate both types of attachment — a flail mower for general maintenance and a brush cutter for heavier clearing work. PANDA FORCE offers both types in compatible mounting configurations, making it straightforward to operate both attachments on the same excavator with a quick coupler change.

The key technical difference is in how each attachment handles impact with hard objects. A flail mower's free-swinging flails deflect when they hit a rock or stump, absorbing the impact without damage. A brush cutter's cutting disc is more rigid and can be damaged by hard impacts — making it less suitable for rocky terrain or areas with buried debris. For stony ground, a flail mower with carbide-tipped flails is the safer choice.

Excavator Brush Cutter Applications

Invasive species removal is one of the most important applications for excavator brush cutters. Species such as Japanese knotweed, Himalayan balsam, giant hogweed and rhododendron require targeted cutting at the base of the plant — a task that a flail mower cannot perform with the required precision. The brush cutter's clean cutting action allows the operator to cut specific plants while leaving surrounding vegetation undamaged.

Orchard and vineyard management requires precise cutting between tree rows and under tree canopies without damaging the trees themselves. The excavator brush cutter's reach and positioning capability, combined with its clean cutting action, makes it ideal for this application. The attachment can be angled to cut at the base of tree trunks and along fence lines without the risk of wrapping or entanglement that can occur with flail mowers.

Forestry and woodland management applications include selective thinning of young woodland, removal of suppressed growth, clearing of rides and firebreaks, and management of woodland edges. The brush cutter's ability to cut stems cleanly at the base makes it suitable for selective work where the goal is to remove specific plants while retaining others.

Construction site clearance requires rapid removal of dense vegetation before earthworks begin. The excavator brush cutter can clear dense scrub, saplings and light woodland quickly, with the excavator arm providing the reach and force needed to work through dense material. The cut material can be pushed into windrows for collection and disposal.

Municipal and amenity applications include tree pit maintenance, hedge base management, cemetery clearance and management of overgrown public spaces. The brush cutter's precision makes it suitable for work in confined spaces and around existing planting where a flail mower would cause collateral damage.

Selecting the Right Excavator Brush Cutter: Technical Considerations

Cutting disc diameter and blade configuration determine the maximum stem diameter the brush cutter can handle and the cutting speed. Larger diameter discs with more cutting blades handle heavier material but require more hydraulic power. The PANDA FORCE PF-EBC Series is available with single-disc and twin-disc configurations to match different application requirements.

Excavator weight class and hydraulic flow must be matched to the brush cutter specification. Brush cutters typically require 40–120 L/min depending on disc size and configuration. The carrier excavator must be capable of supplying the required flow rate at the correct operating pressure. PANDA FORCE technical staff will verify compatibility before confirming a specification.

Blade material and replacement are important maintenance considerations. PANDA FORCE brush cutter blades are manufactured from high-strength alloy steel with hardened cutting edges. Replacement blades are available as standard spare parts. The blade replacement procedure is straightforward and can be performed in the field without specialist tools.

Safety features are critical for brush cutter operation. The PANDA FORCE PF-EBC Series incorporates a full-width rear deflector to contain cut material, a hydraulic motor protection valve to prevent overspeed, and a robust blade guard system. All models carry CE marking under the EU Machinery Directive, confirming compliance with European safety requirements.

PANDA FORCE PF-EBC Series: Engineering and Manufacturing

The PANDA FORCE PF-EBC Series excavator brush cutter is designed and manufactured by SOOSAN Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. at its production facility in South Korea. The manufacturing process follows SOOSAN's established quality standards: laser cutting of structural components, robotic welding, CNC machining of disc hubs and bearing housings, shot blasting and powder coating, hydraulic assembly and pressure testing, and full functional testing before despatch.

The cutting disc assembly uses high-strength alloy steel blades with hardened cutting edges for maximum service life. The disc hub and bearing assembly are engineered for the high radial and axial loads generated during brush cutting, with sealed bearings rated for continuous operation in wet and abrasive conditions. The hydraulic motor is sourced from established European suppliers and is specified to match the flow and pressure requirements of each model.

All PANDA FORCE excavator brush cutters carry CE marking under the EU Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) and are manufactured under ISO 9001 quality management certification. The attachment is compatible with all major excavator brands via machine-specific mounting brackets and hydraulic hose kits. OEM and ODM manufacturing is available for dealers and distributors.

Every PANDA FORCE flail mower passes through SOOSAN Heavy Industries' full production process at the Chungcheongnam-do facility in South Korea. The following describes each production stage, the process parameters and the quality standard applied.

01

Raw Material Receipt & Inspection

ISO 9001

Structural steel (S355JR/S355J2), Hardox 400/500 wear plate and alloy steel for flail components are received with mill certificates. Each batch is inspected for dimensional conformance and material certification before release to production. Non-conforming material is quarantined and returned.

02

Laser Cutting & Plasma Profiling

Main housing plates, side plates and wear components are cut on CNC laser cutting machines to ±0.2mm positional accuracy. Plasma profiling is used for thicker Hardox sections. All cut parts are deburred and edge-prepared before assembly.

03

CNC Machining of Rotor Components

ISO 286

Rotor drum end plates, bearing housings and flail carrier pin bores are machined on CNC turning and milling centres to H7/h6 tolerance class. Bearing housing bores are finish-ground to achieve the required interference fit for bearing installation.

04

Robotic & Manual MIG/MAG Welding

EN ISO 5817

Main housing assembly uses robotic MIG welding for consistent weld quality on repetitive joints. Critical structural joints — rotor bearing housings, mounting bracket interfaces and side plate connections — are completed by certified manual welders to EN ISO 9606-1 qualification. All welds are visually inspected to EN ISO 5817 Level B.

05

Rotor Assembly & Bearing Installation

Rotor drum is assembled with flail carrier pins installed to specified torque. Bearings are installed using hydraulic press to achieve correct interference fit — never hammer-driven. Bearing housings are sealed with specified grease fill before end cap installation.

06

Dynamic Rotor Balancing

ISO 1940 G6.3

Every assembled rotor drum is dynamically balanced on a two-plane balancing machine. Residual imbalance is corrected by addition or removal of balance weights until the rotor meets ISO 1940 G6.3 specification. Balance correction mass and position are recorded on the unit's production record.

07

Shot Blasting & Surface Treatment

ISO 8501-1

Fully assembled housing is shot-blasted to Sa 2.5 surface preparation standard (ISO 8501-1) to remove mill scale, rust and contamination. Two-coat industrial epoxy paint system is applied: zinc-rich primer (60μm DFT) followed by polyurethane topcoat (80μm DFT). Total DFT minimum 140μm.

08

Hydraulic Motor Installation & Pressure Test

Hydraulic motor is installed with new O-ring seals and torqued to specification. All hydraulic connections are pressure-tested at 1.5× rated working pressure for a minimum of 10 minutes. Any leakage results in rejection and rework. Relief valve setting is verified against specification.

09

Functional Run Test

Rotor is run up to rated speed under no-load conditions. Bearing temperature is monitored for 30 minutes — maximum permissible temperature rise is 40°C above ambient. Vibration level is checked against acceptance criteria. Any anomaly triggers investigation before the unit proceeds.

10

Final Inspection & Despatch

ISO 9001

Final inspection covers dimensional verification of mounting interface, visual inspection of all welds and surface treatment, completeness of documentation (CE Declaration, operator manual, spare parts list, hydraulic hose kit), and correct labelling. Inspection record is filed against the unit serial number.

Client

Specialist Orchard Management Contractor, Bordeaux Region

⚠

Challenge

Inter-row vegetation management in high-density apple orchards with 2.8-metre row spacing. Tractor-mounted disc mowers caused root damage on headlands; manual strimming was too slow for the 85-hectare estate.

⚙

Solution

PF-EBC-800 Excavator Brush Cutter on a 6-tonne Kubota KX060. Compact working width and precise arm positioning allowed clean cutting between tree rows without root zone disturbance.

✓

Result

Inter-row cutting cycle reduced from 18 days (manual) to 4 days. Zero root zone disturbance recorded. Fruit quality scores improved in the following harvest season, attributed to reduced soil compaction.

"The precision of the excavator arm means we can cut right up to the tree base without any risk of bark damage. The disc cutter gives a much cleaner finish than a flail in the orchard environment."
